Happy December, folks.
My trip home went fairly well, with a couple minor SNAFU's, the worst of which being that my exit for the Throgs Neck Bridge off of the Hutch was closed. I'm not sure if it was completely closed, or just closed the way I decided to go. Either way, I was momentarily lost in Parkchester, in the Bronx. I'm not a fan of New York City, and I'm even less a fan of the Bronx. And I'm even less a fan of both when it's dark and I don't know where I'm going. Needless to say, my trip, which usually takes about 3 hours, ended up taking four and a half. I guess this wasn't really too bad, considering the holiday traffic.
Thanksgiving was great, as usual. Plenty to eat and of course, it was nice to see the family. My room has been converted into Bobby's bachelor pad, save for a small section towards the back where most of my leftover stuff (read: crap) still sits, upset that it was not chosen to make the haul to the Redneck Riviera. Didn't do much of anything at home. I can't say I was really on vacation, as being unemployed since September has left me with more than enough free time. It was just nice to sit back and relax with the family.
Visited the boys over at WLIR, specifically running into Scott, Adam, and Chris. It was nice to see them, but a little strange to be back in the old building. It still has that strange but familiar scent, one I can't quite place or describe. One might suggest that it's the smell of radio.
In dork related news, the ailing PII-300 that I had lent Bobby to use for web surfing and instant messaging took a crap recently. Since I couldn't be bothered with updating the months old Gentoo install on the box, I downloaded a fresh copy of Fedora. I have to say, I was quite impressed. Networking was a snap (although it didn't seem to immediately discover the ancient Etherlink III I have in that machine), printer setup was relatively painless, and even setting up Samba seemed like less of a chore. I was very impressed with the graphical installer and also the concept of immediately loading X once the kernel is loaded. Very user friendly tactic. I imagine that feature can be disabled, but I didn't bother checking. So now Bobby has a working machine that's more or less up to date. And yes, I took the liberty of upgrading gaim as soon as possible.
The ride back was pleasant, I left at about 2p on Saturday, so I was treated to a spectacular sunset across the Hudson Valley. I've been taking it easy on Little Blue ever since his timing belt failure. I got back in town after a trip of about three and a half hours. Caught some good two meter activity on the 147.060 repeater just as I got on the Thruway off the Cross County.
Today, my mission is to clean up around the apartment here and there, while I wait with bated breath to hear from my potential new employer.
